Dr. Kenney’s Friday 5 Spot
I interact with hundreds of patients each week and get asked a lot of questions. On Fridays I like to share some of the answers I give and hope it has value for you.
Something interesting I’m seeing throughout all this? I would say that among personal friends, acquaintances, businesses I associate with and those in my profession there are 3 categories:
1 – People that previously talked a big game of leadership, tenacity, strength, etc. that folded up instantly during all this. Even worse, many in this group continue to criticize those that haven’t.
2 – People that I thought were strong and are proving me 100% right. Many people that I look up to have proved to me why during these times.
3 – People that I wouldn’t have necessarily expected to but have risen to the occasion and have displayed adaptability, strength, leadership, kindness and other amazing traits. I see this daily.
I believe that crisis reveals character, and this is really on display right now.
Something I’d advise against? It seems since the COVID19 outbreak that half of Facebook are now either scientists, economists or both. The problem is that many of these “scientists” are posting selfies with their “knowledge” 3 weeks after posting selfies talking about how they couldn’t keep a relationship. And these “economists” are often people we couldn’t trust to make a buck-fifty at a lemonade stand. You wouldn’t trust your mechanic to fix your teeth so don’t trust Karen from Facebook to get you 100% of your news. The point here is that with so much information available to us, be a little weary of what you’re listening to and don’t over-consume information and freak yourself out.
A piece of advice I’d recommend? Regardless of where you’re at health-wise, this whole thing should be a wakeup call to improve your health. We will always encounter germs, that is a certainty. What it comes down to however, is how strong your body is to defend itself. Most of those defenses will be built by the choices you make daily – nutritionally (what goes into your body), physically (exercise, etc.) and mentally (managing stress, etc.). If you’ve been making poor choices, then start making better ones and if you’ve been good; then be great. Lose that weight, lower that blood pressure, start improving your cardiovascular fitness, etc.
What have I been doing for exercise? Without gyms being available, many are curious how they can exercise on their own. For me personally here is the list of what I’m doing: In terms of things that don’t require equipment I’m doing pushups, burpees, my wife’s Perfect 20 workouts and outdoor running. As far as what I’m using in terms of equipment – I have a pullup/dip apparatus I’m doing both on, I have a 450 lb. tire and a sledgehammer I use to do flips and sledge jacks on, I have battle ropes and a few dumbbells I use and finally I’ve been experimenting with a set of resistance bands my son got for Christmas. Regardless of what you have available to you, make sure you’re doing something.
A quote I love? “There are three types of people in this world: sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. Some people prefer to believe that evil doesn’t exist in the world, and if it ever darkened their doorstep, they wouldn’t know how to protect themselves. Those are the sheep. Then you’ve got predators who use violence to prey on the weak. They’re the wolves. And then there are those blessed with the gift of aggression, an overpowering need to protect the flock. These men are the rare breed who live to confront the wolf. They are the sheepdog.” – from the movie American Sniper
