Dr. Kenney’s Friday 5 Spot
I interact with hundreds of patients each week (under normal circumstances, though less during the crisis obviously) and get asked a lot of questions. On Fridays I like to share some of the answers I give and hope it has value for you.
A thought about Mother’s Day? I’ve been blessed to have a good mom and even more blessed to have great moms for my children (my first two kids are from my first marriage and I have a son and a daughter due in August with my wife now). Something I often think back to occurred before Mary and I got married 3 years ago when we were meeting with our pastor leading up to the wedding. He said, “when a woman encourages her man even a little bit, he feels inspired and there is nothing he won’t be able to accomplish.” I am truly lucky now to have a wife that does this. The encouragement I have received from my wife has allowed me to become a far better man than I ever had been before – father, doctor, athlete, business owner, friend, etc. To have that for myself is special but to have my children being raised by her and receiving that same encouragement and love is truly amazing.
Something that I’ve seen recently that has impressed me? There is a new coffee place in Castle Pines that I’ve gone to several times recently. They opened 3 weeks ago, not exactly an ideal time or how they planned it I’m certain. However, each time I’ve gone there I’ve seen them excited, handing out samples, improving their procedures to match our situation and really drawing in a lot of business as a result. Why do like this? Because I love hustle and love to see it rewarded. I think it’s great when people avoid complaining, make the best of a situation and give it their best. This doesn’t mean things will go perfectly all the time, but it does make it likely that others will respect the effort and give them an opportunity. As I often tell the players I coach in football “I don’t expect a perfect outcome, but I do expect a perfect effort.” Keep hustling everyone!
Something that has been inspiring me? My oldest son is 13 and has been keeping up with his own exercise program. I’ve shown him how to do all of it, but he has taken the time and initiative to do it on his own for weeks now. When he’s at his mom’s he works out daily on his own and when he’s with me we’ll work out together, but he’ll also go off and do things on his own as well. It really makes me proud when he tells me what he’s done, how it’s been helping him and how proud he is of himself for doing it. What has inspired me the most though is seeing how his 10-year-old brother has now begun to follow his lead and work out regularly as well. Setting a great example and letting the example do your talking is something I believe in wholeheartedly.
Something I’ve been eating that I’ve been enjoying? It’s not one specific meal but last week I replaced my old grill with a new Traeger Grill that is a combination grill and smoker. Since I bought it, I’ve started looking up new recipes and have found far tastier ways to cook some of the meat and vegetable staples I usually enjoy. As a bonus, I’m cooking more in bulk and have really liked having tasty food ready to go for additional meals rather than having to take more time and get things together.
Some quotes I love? “Fear is a force that sharpens your senses. Being afraid is a state of paralysis in which you can’t do anything.” – Marcus Luttrell
“When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in, that’s what the storm is all about.” – Inky Johnson
