Dr. Kenney’s Friday 5 Spot
On Fridays I like to share some of the experiences I’ve had during the week with patients and in my personal life that I’ve found significant in some way. I like to share them in hopes that you might find value in them and have something resonate with you in your life.
Something that has inspired me over the past week? (#1) – As most of you are aware, my brother in law died suddenly at the age of 32. He was like a brother to me and last week in my 5 Spot I mentioned his “honor walk” – being brought down to donate all his organs to help others. Since I wrote that, I have now seen a picture and video of him during that honor walk. He was draped in the American flag, had a Captain America shield and Broncos jersey on top of him, and had many pictures of his loved ones surrounding him as well. I got very emotional when I saw the pictures thinking how proud I was of him and how the pictures represented the man I knew so well – unselfish, someone everyone adored, tough, patriotic, and strong. I will never forget that photo of him and it will give me strength until it’s my time to go.
Something else that has inspired me over the past week or so? (#2) – On my oldest son’s tackle football team there is a girl that I’ve noticed has an incredibly strong work ethic. This has translated into her making great plays on the field and this past weekend she served as one of the team captains. During one of the games, there was a big shoving match and our coach asked the players why they were allowing themselves to get dragged into something like that. They responded, “they were being really mean to Lilly” to which the coach said, “ok good job then, we can’t have that” and walked away. To be one of the only females on a boys football team takes guts, to work hard and get onto the field takes determination and to reach a point where her teammates felt the need to defend her took earning the respect of those around her. I think this young lady is setting quite an example whether she realizes it or not.
Another form of inspiration over the past week? (#3) – During my oldest son’s football game this past weekend he scored his first touchdown of the season. My son is very hard working and humble but as soon as he scored, I was absolutely thrilled to see him pointing up at his uncle in heaven. The touchdown itself was great but it inspired me seeing him thinking of his uncle and trying to honor him in his own special way. And as one of his former coaches, I know he made his uncle proud!
An important question to ask yourself? With the passing of my brother in law I have been struck with how many people he touched. What hit me even more is how the overwhelming majority really knew who he was and what he was about – his faith, his values, etc. This got me thinking about what people would think and say about me if I were to pass. My answer is not important to you but what is important is your answer about yourself. If your answer pleases you then keep up the great work you’re doing. If it does not please you then realize you have the time to change it starting right now if you desire.
